Foundation For Disaster
by Arisa May · Spotlight & Stars #4 · August 14, 2026

She thinks he's a monster. He thinks she's the best thing that's ever happened to him. Lia has three rules: do flawless work, secure a permanent contract, and never let Fifth Pulse's golden leader see how much she despises him. Jin-woo broke the heart of the woman who had treated Lia like a sister, and she will never forgive him for it. Fortunately, Lia is a professional. She can smile politely while doing his makeup and keep all her murderous opinions safely inside her head. Unfortunately, Jin-woo can hear them. Every thought within five meters is his whether he wants it or not, and right now his new makeup artist is mentally debating whether a mascara wand or a pair of tweezers would make the more plausible murder weapon. He should be terrified. Instead, he's biting his cheek to keep from laughing. Because beneath Lia's creative hostility is a mind he can't stop listening to: brilliant, honest, fiercely loyal, and completely unlike the carefully filtered people who surround him. She may think he's a heartless jerk, but Jin-woo knows the truth about the breakup. He just can't defend himself without revealing the one secret nobody can ever know. The smart move would be to keep his distance. Instead, every time Lia picks up a makeup brush, he finds himself leaning in. For years, Jin-woo has worn headphones to keep the world out. Now he takes them off just to hear her. His impossible mission: win her trust, clear his name without exposing his secret, and somehow convince the girl planning his funeral to rewrite it as a love story instead While this book is part of the Spotlight & Stars series, it features a complete, self-contained story and can be fully enjoyed as a standalone novel.

Aunt LoLo — 5/5
When I heard a few months ago that this would be Ms. May's funniest book yet...I still didn't understand what I was in for. Lia is fresh out of beauty school, and lands a probationary contract with a mid-tier K-Pop agency, alongside her best friend Hana. Jin-Woo is the "Thoughtful Leader" of the group she gets assigned to, and also the man who broke her best friend's heart. Lia spends weeks calmly doing his makeup, and doing it flawlessly, while internally plotting increasingly creative ways to end his miserable existence using tweezers or setting spray. Only problem? Jin-Woo can secretly hear every. single. thought. And he thinks she's hilarious. Arisa May combines her impressive K-Pop culture knowledge with low/no spice romance and a hint of magic. (Jin-Woo's mind-reading ability is NOT the norm in this world. Magic is scattered around, unknown to most of the population.) I loved this story...I honestly couldn't see how Lia and Jin-Woo were going to make it work, but it ended up happy, and that's what mattered. This book was a tad darker than other books - there was a little more language, and a disturbing side-plot involving attempted assault - but it was still a fabulous read. I was laughing, and I highlighted so much of it! 🤬 - occasional, biblical ⚔️ - none 🏳️🌈 - At one point, someone wonders if two men are in a relationship (they aren't) 🌶️ - some kisses, a mention that two people dating might share a bed at some point 🫣 - a grandfather has had a stroke, there was a side plot where a "nice guy" intended to sexually assault the FMC. It was stopped before anything happened, but was still disturbing.
